Gold is the most popular precious metal in the world appreciated for its beauty. It is dense, soft, shinny and the most malleable and ductile metal. It is rarely affected by other chemical metals but has very little resistance in pure form reason for which it is generally alloyed with other metals such as copper, nickel and silver.


The purity of the gold is dependent on the quantity of other metals with which it has been combined – the percentage is quantified on a scale form 1-24 karats. Gold is one of the heaviest metals and internationally it has been agreed that the weight measurement is the troy ounce.


Throughout the centuries, gold has been used as a currency and has been considered to be a symbol of wealth. From jewelry made of gold to accessories of all types, gold was purchased by those who were in possession of larger amounts of money. When it comes to jewelry, due to the fact that gold has small resistance, it is alloyed with other materials but just to the right proportion in order to avoid decreasing its value.


All over the world gold was given the property of monetary exchange through the issuance of gold coins widely used in the past in daily commercial and trade relations. With the appearance of paper instruments, the value of the gold has been converted and the value of the issued paper money is proportional with the gold reserves.


Although many people are thinking of gold mainly under the form of jewelry or accessories, there is still a big part that decides to buy gold as an alternative to the traditional means of investment. During troubled time of uncertainty and instability it is quite difficult to ascertain the viability of banks or predict inflation and currency depreciation while purchasing gold is going on the safe side.


It is common to buy gold in the form of bullion coins or, in case a larger funds are available, under the form of bars. Even though at first sight the operation is fairly simple, in order to get the best price and benefit the most, investors should take the advice of those specializes in gold trading.
