Why Sterling Silver Cable Chain is THE Classic Style

Simplicity can be beautiful. The simple things seem to endure; they are almost timeless.

Sterling silver cable chains are an example of this philosophy. This was very likely the first chain design — a round link passing through the next round link and so on. The links settle naturally into a pattern with the second link perpendicular to the first and third links. As it builds, the alternating orientation of the links gives the chain a pleasing appearance. This pattern has been used as a design element for centuries.

One of the reasons these chains are so popular is because they are very strong. If you have ever had your car towed, you may know that the chain used by a tow truck operator is a steel cable chain. The reason is strength. Jewelry chains work the same way, but on a small scale. A well made silver cable has links that are soldered closed and will easily withstand the stress put on the links when the chain supports a pendant.

A sterling silver cable chain is the classic style basic chain. Anyone who wears jewelry should have at least one. These chains are attractive worn alone or with a pendant.

This design is made in very fine chains less than 1mm wide to more than 10mm wide.

Another reason this style is so popular is the versatile nature of the design. As long as the links simply pass one through the next, it is a cable design; but there are many possible variations. The links do not have to be round. They can be any shape at all, from oval to square. Jewelry made with alternating shape links like round and oval are quite beautiful.

Traditionally this type of jewelry is made with round, ring shaped links. Popular styles today might be made with triangular, heart shape, star shape or diamond shaped links.

Another popular variation is made with flat links. In this style, the round wire links are flattened in a rolling mill or by hammering so they resemble washers. This gives the finished piece a completely different appearance.

The links can also be made with half round or square wire. Fancy styles can be made with twisted wire links or brushed finish links. Many pieces combine different type links in alternating patterns to produce designer style necklaces and bracelets.

A very popular variation is the Rolo chain. This style has wide close fitting links; but it is constructed in exactly the same manner as the classic cable design.

This isn’t just gorgeous jewelry. Silver chains have intrinsic value – silver is a precious metal. However, compared to the cost of other precious metals – gold and platinum – silver is still affordable. Silver chains can be worn over a lifetime, and can even become heirlooms. A sterling silver cable chain is a much appreciated gift that should last many years.

The secret to the success of these chains is their simplicity. They can be timeless and unassuming; they can also be bold and fresh. There is a sterling silver cable chain to suit every style!
