Wedding Rings - Silver Or Gold?

Up until about the last 5 or 6 years there was usually no question about which metal your wedding ring would be made of. It was always gold unless you had some kind of allergy to gold, in which case you went for platinum, if you could afford it, or silver if you couldn’t.

This worked fine because traditionally, younger people wore silver jewellery because it was cheaper and then progressed to gold once they reached a certain age, or got married and had to match up jewellery with a gold wedding ring.

Moving onto gold was viewed as having achieved a certain level of sophistication. More often than not, your first piece of gold jewellery, if not your wedding ring, would mark a big birthday like 18 or 21 and from that point on there was no looking back.

You moved from the silver brigade to the gold brigade and never looked backwards – and woe betide anyone who dared to mix gold and silver. That was just classed as tacky, or common.

These days however, the older more sophisticated lady is embracing junk jewellery in all its forms. And for junk, just read anything that is not gold, including silver. So jewellery collections of both the old and young alike are a fantastic mismatch of a range of colours, precious metals and semi-precious stones.

This makes choosing whether to go for a gold wedding ring, or a silver or platinum ring much more difficult.

Is varied junk jewellery likely to stay? I would say so, although not necessarily in the form it is now. I think one thing is for sure, it is unlikely that we will ever go back to the traditional approach of ‘gold is standard in a wedding ring’.

So for now – why not go for a mixture of both gold and silver (or platinum). This will blend in better whatever other accessories you wear and there are an ever increasing number of styles available in the jewellery market place today.
